Blogging Disadvantages You Should Know (Before You Start Blogging)

Blogging may be therapeutic in some way but it could get stressful because of the blogging disadvantages you should be aware of especially if you're starting a blog.

Yes, it could be stressful but that shouldn't stop you from starting a blog soon or if you have a blog already, from continuing to blog.

When I was still starting, I wasn't aware that blogging has disadvantages too – like all things out there, there are pros and cons in blogging.

Note: This post may contain affiliate links, which means if you buy from my link I might make a small commission. This does not affect the price you pay. See the full affiliate disclosure here.

Let's assume you're about to start or you're still in the early phase of blogging, then you might be aware already of the drawbacks of blogging.

So in this post, I share with you my experiences and how it affects my life as a blogger that no one tells us before starting this journey.

Here are the blogging disadvantages you should know ahead of time:

1. Invest in it

Well, when we hear investment, we could only think about money. And talking about money, spending it, or lacking it is already one of the blogging disadvantages that will probably turn you away from blogging.

But you thought it wrong when you think it's enough to spend money to put up a blog and let people find it.

Blogging is not a hide-and-seek game. People wouldn't just wake up one day and say, “I need to research What Blogs Her Mind and her posts and support her.”

Oh, I could only hope it works that way.

But it's one big fat NO.

You need to promote and market it darling, or else your blog would look like a food forgotten or being thrown in the street in which flies pester on it (um, excuse the language).

Harsh, but it's true unless you have invested your time in it. Learning and implementing SEO skills, for example.

The best way to learn is through self-education. The internet is just one click away from us, you just need to spend a little dime on it.

If you want to know and learn about SEO and how it improves our blog, you can start with Moz and SEMRUSH

There are also YouTube videos and channels to watch if you want to educate yourself about SEO.

There are a lot of best marketers and bloggers who can help you improve in this field through their websites and posts.

This SEO e-book from a blogger helps me understand more about the functions of SEO and how to optimise my blog. It has even helped me rank my blog posts on the first page of Google.

2. You have to be a tech-savvy

WordPress is one of the best platforms for blogging, but it doesn't offer you everything for your gain. WordPress is just one way of investment as a blogger. You have to know how to gain and benefit from using it.

Aside from using this service for your blog, you also have a host that could help you.

Yet, let's be honest here, some of us don't immediately run into them for support when it involves the functions or malfunctions in our blog. We try to solve it first on our own, and Google and YouTube are our helping hands.

However, Google search results and vloggers don't directly help us. They only show us how a particular thing works. You follow the instructions, and you do the work yourself unless you're willing to pay someone to do it for you which is quite pricey for bloggers who can't and don't want to spend money or are still in the trial phase of blogging.

But thanks to SiteGround, when I was still starting and when I am on the verge of giving up, I turn to them. Customer support is excellent and very accommodating. When Siteground cannot seem to solve everything, there's Codeable as their partner.

The good thing is when you're on Siteground; you get $59 off for whatever transaction or project you might need fixing.

Not being tech-savvy shouldn't discourage you however from creating a blog. I myself had an almost null idea of what I was getting myself into, but if you love blogging and are determined to make it work, this blogging disadvantage shouldn't scare you away.

But becoming tech-savvy can't be that complicated. You don't have to learn Java coding, CSS, and other computer languages before you create a blog.

There are already pre-made templates you can use for your blog, yes, like I mentioned above, you have to invest in your blog.

You can buy templates on Etsy and on Creative Market for a very affordable price – you install it and normally, when you buy a theme you also get a guide or documentation on how to use and change the theme in a video or PDF form.

If you have the patience to read and watch the tutorials, then you can surely create a gorgeous blog despite the lack of coding knowledge.

Another useful tool that will help you when you're not into techy stuff is Canva. Your blog needs something to entertain your visitors and readers even though some like it plain but blog graphics help you improve your blog.

But if you're someone who doesn't want to rely on Google and YouTube and want to see straight away how to work on WordPress and understand how to blog on WordPress, you should check out this awesome course to free yourself from frustrations while trying to figure out WordPress and its functions.

3. Leaving your comfort zone

Since you have to promote your blog, you need to communicate a lot with people. You have to engage with other bloggers as well.

Apart from that, you have to do what you always think you can't do. Write what is on your mind. Talk with different people. You will see along the way you'll learn a lot. If you're too shy and you think you're too introverted to interact with people, then you have to overcome it.

It's not that bad and hard after all; it's for your growth and development. You need to explore and discover new things. It's a stepping stone for growing and achieving your goals in life.

Fortunately for introverts like me, we don't have to suffer that much since we have already different platforms or websites to communicate and connect with other people online.

Promoting a blog is one of the blogging disadvantages that a lot of bloggers experience, not because they're shy, but sometimes, they overdo it and instead of attracting a potential reader or visitor; they discourage them.

So how can you properly promote your blog?

Well, I'm not an expert either in marketing, but I can only share what I noticed so far.

You shouldn't only promote your blog posts or what you sell every time you get a chance, but you should also connect with other bloggers – give solutions to their problems (if you have), answer their questions, or take part in their survey posts and also visit their blogs, read their posts and comment on them.

Other than these mentioned above, one of the blogging disadvantages is I have to be on my phone most of the time, or on my laptop.

Of course, not chatting, reading some nonsense on Facebook, or playing Candy Crush, but marketing and getting my blog out there.

I need to mention it for the sake of other bloggers who have problems with their husbands and boyfriends being on their phones or laptops all the time.

They don't get it, show them in the end, the fruit of you being on your phone ALL THE TIME.

4. Blog legally

This one's a surprising realisation that dawned on me when I was still a novice at blogging.

I have to be careful. I don't want to pay dollars for being stupid and ignorant! There are factors to be considered, and one of them is if you're blogging legally.

Can your blog avoid you from being penalised? Or do you have a supporting document to avoid getting penalised? You might wonder what I am talking about here.

Darling, are you blogging legally? Do you have a Privacy Policy, Terms of Use, and Disclaimer?

Please don't tell me you have used a generator for these essential legal documents. It won't even protect you and your business. Here's a blog post explaining why you need a privacy policy.

Usually, it costs a lot with consultation alone from a lawyer, plus purchasing these documents; I could only guess that it would rip you off for over 1000 dollars.

Need not worry because you have another option; you can get those at a very affordable price. Click here to know more about the best-selling legal templates, plus nine bonuses that will surely protect you and your business.

You are lucky to have read this post if you're still thinking of creating a blog. Speaking of the matter, you can grab this 50+ page blog planner to help you in starting a blog.

Aside from adding those legal documents to your blog, you need to know the following so you won't encounter any problems with other bloggers or brands:

  • You should not copy other's content.
  • You should give credit to the owner of the photos if you're using photos from free websites (some don't require it, but make sure you read what type of license the photos have.)
  • You should not resell the products they sell or give for free unless you bought a license that allows you to do so.
  • You should not buy traffic or engage in paid backlinking activities – Google will not like it.

5. You might not see the result immediately

No matter how much you have invested in your blog, it may be money or time, you shouldn't expect to see the result or be successful after making your blog live and publishing 3 blog posts.

It takes time for you to attract the audience or readers of your blog. It takes hours of learning SEO or growing your social media accounts so you will gain blog traffic.

If you don't see the result immediately, I know you will get discouraged, and that's a normal phase. But you should accept that's how it works. There's no shortcut to success.

You will get discouraged, but it doesn't mean you have to quit. If you feel like quitting, then think of the time and money you spent just to create your blog.

Blogging has advantages too

Now let's talk briefly about the advantages of blogging, I know you don't want to hear the negative side only, so at least we have now the pros of blogging.

  • Through blogging, you'll discover your passion and what you like to write and share
  • You will also improve your writing.
  • You will meet and know different people from different parts of the world.
  • You will also discover technical and digital skills and in no time, you'll learn them yourself and apply those technical and digital skils.
  • You can monetize your blog and maybe build a business from it.

In a nutshell…

Experiences about blogging disadvantages may differ from person to person, but these mentioned above are the most common ones that not only I have experienced but also other bloggers.

If you have other realizations or bitterness of being in the dark before blogging, don't hesitate to share it here so others could also read them and relate to them.
